IMC Tuna Club
September 2008
Last weekend Jeff King went out Tuna fishing. Had to go 72 miles offshore but got nine great fish. Had 2 people on board with 5 rods out and 5 fish on at one time.
Like father like daughter. Hailey King checks out her dads catch.

The crew of the SeaLegs had a great trip Tuna fishing.
Join the Islands Marine Center, Inc. Tuna Club. Just email us your email address and we will add you to our Email Club. Friday or Saturday we will check the weather and decide if we plan on going out. Brian Krantz, our Sales Manager will be leaving his Lopez slip Saturday after work and heading to Neah Bay. He will spend the night there and head out Sunday morning for a day of fishing. You can either spend the night at Neah Bay or head back home. Brian will head back to Lopez Sunday night. The photos are from summer 2007 when he first started fish for the Tuna. He and Denny Jardine had a great trip, catching 8 Tuna, 3 Cabzon and 2 Ling Cod. The tuna ranged from 27-37lbs. This photos shows the 37lbs. fish.
#1 Info:
Hello IMC Tuna Club members:
Tip of the day (pun intended):
Only catch as many Tuna as your boat can safely carry.
This is our first email. If you know others that should be getting an email check with them about this one. If they didn’t get it then they need to let Lesley know their email address so she can get them on board. imc@rockisland.com
The Plan: When the water temp and weather look good a few days before Saturday we will send an email out to meet in Neah Bay Saturday evening. You can anchor or pay for moorage. Good to fuel up there. They have cheaper fuel (reservation) but close at sundown and sometimes a little earlier and we will be leaving one hour before sunrise to get to the Tuna grounds. Usually 2 hours to the fish and when we have filled the boat, J , we head home. I go back to Lopez because I only have ice but feel free to head back to Neah Bay, they would love to see your fish and have cleaning stations! Often I fish Cape Flatt ery, Renfrew, Sooke etc. on the way home. I usually get back to Lopez no earlier than 3pm and always before dark.
The Problem: The water is not warming up and the weather has been bad. When it changes we will go.
Ways to blow money until you can spend it on fuel:
www.terrafin.com For $100 a year you can subscribe to this web site that gives sea surface temp data and water clarity (chlorophyll) data. Please let them know I (captainbk) referred you or put in one of your buddies that joined. Your refer gets a free month and you get a free month. If you don’t want to blow the money I keep checking it and will let you know.
IMC has a great starter pack of Tuna Jigs (limited supply). See attached sample picture, price including shipping and tax is $82.09. Call IMC at 360.468.3377 and ask for Shellene or Lesley, they will take your credit card number and mail it to you. I love Tuna fishing because I have never (knock on wood) lost a jig, not one. You may have Tuna rods or you may want to blow lots of money and buy Tuna rods and reels but your bottom fish rods will work great. Just pick up our starter pack or some other Tuna Jigs and get the boat ready so that you can troll 6 or more rods. We troll at 6-8 mph right on the surface. No need for downriggers. Just tie the jigs up to your bottom fish rods and get then propped on the boat so that they have as much spread between them as possible. I do two straight back off the transom, two half way up the gunnel at 45 degrees a nd two farther up the gunnel pointed straight out (90 degrees). This is obviously not the end all in tuna rigging but it is all you really need to do. The six rods out is why it is nice to have a few people on the boat. Once a fish or two is hooked up someone has fight them and someone has to get the rest of the gear in. Then start casting swimbaits if you have them.
That is all for now, if you are a God fearing individual, pray for warm water!
Sincerely,
Brian Krantz

It is getting warmer…….

Hi Tuna Club Members!
I have been getting calls and we are all chomping at the bit. The guys down South are slaughtering the fish. Stories of one stop and boating 30 fish have been heard! At first they were heading 70 miles off shore but now they are running a more reasonable 40 and sometimes less.
The satellite images have been too poor to share. What glimpses we have been able to see is that our fishing area is still not warm or clear enough. This means that we could probably be into fish 60 miles off Cape Flattery but I am waiting to run when I think we can get fish 40 miles off of Cape Flattery. Last year we got them 37 miles out.
When I get some good satellite shots I will share them.
Talk to everyone soon,
Brian Krantz

We have Fish!
Two of our most blood thirsty and honorable members, Sealegs and White Frog got into fish 70 miles SW of Tatoosh Island. They caught 20 fish (15 – 30 lbs each) in 60 degree water. They had planned on spending the night but the water was too rough.
It has been brutal that there have been no satellite images to let us know where the water is. It has just been to overcast. Another member was out 62 miles and had blue water but only 55 degrees and no luck.
Another report from Team Burnewiin fishing out of Oregon: “the boat just down sea from us about 1 mile apart had a six ft. 250-300lb Blue fin tear his hand line off his boat 200lb tuna cord with 150lb mono "GONE" and all the crew saw the Blue come into the pattern from about 250feet back and slam the gear!!!.”
If others are planning on making a run and want crew to share expenses or would like a tag along boat let us know and we can email your contact info to club members.
If weather permits I am planning on going Saturday the 30th in the evening and going off shore on Sunday then home Sunday Evening.
